In most cases, a votive object or ex-voto visibly takes the form of the body part to which its wish or gratitude pertains. Eyes, nose, mouth, heart, leg … The uterus shown as a spiked sphere or a toad is the only exception. Ethnologists had an interest in emphasizing the regional character of the objects, and there were different thoughts on the development of the unusual spiked shape. Some believed it was inspired by nature, such as chestnuts or hedgehogs. Today's researchers also suppose an influence by Christian iconology through depictions of the unborn Jesus in the womb surrounded by a halo of rays.
